Proper tension adjustment is applied on all pulleys including air conditioning, alternators, power steering, and water pumps. Belts with cracks, separations, or stretch marks are detected by the staff at Guy’s and squealing or squeaking belts are easily replaced as are broken belts. Belt tensioners are employed to get the correct belt resistance because a sagging or loose belt causes premature or undue wear to any kind of belts. Available belts include V-belts, serpentine, double-sided multi ribbed, and a new type of stretch-fit belts which look like standard fit belts. They can be installed without the use of a tensioner because they are self-tensioning.

V-Belts were the belts for many early model cars. They fit into a V shaped groove and come in several thicknesses.

Serpentine belts are commonly used on most cars from the early 80’s until today. They have a flat side on one side and a multi-rib side to drive the pulleys.

Double-sided multi ribbed belts are used on some European cars. The belt ribs are on each side of the belt so that either side of the belt can be used to drive a pulley.

Stretch-fit belts are commonly used on GMC, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Chrysler, Dodge, Hummer, Mercedes Benz, Bavarian Motor Works (BMW), Subaru, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. Vehicles that have stretch fit belts such as the Gates Micro-fit belts have the patented Twist-lock technology and are constructed with a highly engineered flexible polyamide cord for longer durability. They also require special tools to install.
